Tom Jones’ personal experience led him to dedicate much of his life to humanitarian causes. As a child, Tom suffered severe child abuse at home and was removed by authorities at the age of 10. Placed in a children’s home, Tom was still far from safe. For years to follow, Tom continued to be subjected to physical abuse and sexual abuse that could have permanently scarred him.
Instead, Tom turned fear, anger and frustration into motivation, discipline and an intense desire to excel. He became a champion prizefighter achieving 7 national and international championships including two world championships.
Recognizing that other children were suffering the same abuse that he experienced, and seeing other grave problems in the world around him, Tom felt compelled to use his athletic talents to make a difference.
In 1997, while running to train for a prizefight, Tom had an epiphany. He realized that he could use extreme athletic events to raise awareness and funding for causes that he deeply cared about.
Spanning more than a dozen years since, Tom has created and completed numerous ultra-endurance and world record events to benefit children’s and environmental causes, and has toured with the USO to support US soldiers fighting overseas.
In 2009, he partnered with scientists and sponsor companies to create the Plastic Free Ocean organization which has developed the first feasible plan for ridding the world’s oceans and tidal zones of the deadly plastic waste and breakdown byproducts that kill more marine animals every year than any non-natural cause and that threaten human health worldwide.
As a husband, father, citizen and patriot, Tom strives to set an example of what an individual can accomplish to benefit his fellow man, his community, his country and the world at large.
